Custom Domains
Every namespace receives email at anything@<namespace>.mailisk.net. With a custom domain, the same namespace also receives email sent to your own domain, for example anything@test.example.com. Email arriving at either address lands in the same inbox, is searched with the same API, and is subject to the same retention, quota and sender filtering settings.
Custom domains are configured per namespace in the dashboard under Namespaces → (your namespace) → Settings → Custom domains. Only organisation owners and admins can add or remove them.
Custom domains are available on paid plans, which include one custom domain per organisation. The domain can be attached to any namespace in the organisation.
Choose a subdomain
Use a domain that does not receive real email today, such as test.example.com or qa.example.com. Setting up a custom domain sends all email for that domain to Mailisk, so adding your company's main domain (example.com) would route your real email to Mailisk instead of your email provider.
Each domain is used exactly as entered. Adding test.example.com does not cover staging.test.example.com; add that separately if you need it.
Set up the DNS records
After you add a domain, the dashboard shows two records to create at your DNS provider:
| Type | Name | Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| TXT | _mailisk.test.example.com | mailisk-verify=<token> | Proves that your organisation owns the domain. |
| MX | test.example.com | mailisk.net, priority 10 | Sends the domain's email to Mailisk's servers. |
Copy the exact values from the dashboard, since the verification token is unique to your domain. Some DNS providers add your domain to the name automatically; in that case enter only _mailisk.test and test.
If the domain already has other MX records, Mailisk's record must have the lowest priority number. Senders try the lowest number first, so any host listed before Mailisk would receive the email instead.
Verification
Click Check DNS once the records are in place. DNS changes can take a few minutes to become visible, depending on your provider and the records' TTL. Mailisk also checks new domains automatically every hour for 7 days after you add them.
Once both records are found, the domain shows Receiving and email sent to it is delivered to the namespace.
A domain can only receive email for one organisation at a time. If another organisation has already verified the same domain, verification fails until that organisation removes it.
Keeping a domain verified
Mailisk re-checks verified domains every hour. If the records disappear, for example after a DNS migration, the domain shows DNS missing and keeps receiving email for 3 days. Restore the records within that time and the domain returns to Receiving on the next check.
If the records are still missing after 3 days, the domain shows Stopped and email sent to it is rejected. Restore the records and click Check DNS to start receiving again.
Removing a custom domain or deleting its namespace stops receiving straight away. Moving to a plan without custom domains stops receiving within 15 minutes; the domains stay in your settings and start receiving again if you upgrade.
Sending email
Custom domains currently apply to receiving only. Outbound email is still sent from Mailisk's domains.
